Books Covering the History of Berlin, Vermont

There have been two hard cover books published covering the history of Berlin, Vermont

 The first was edited by Mary Greene  Nye and covers Berlin’s history from 1763 until 1820.

The book is a dark green hardcover and measures 5 5/8 by 8 inches.

The Berlin Historical Society has about 5 copies in its files but they have no copies for sale. added copies are occasionally found in used book stores and on the internet. The price runs generally runs about $20 plus shipping.

“A Place to Pass Through: Berlin, Vermont 1820-1991" was published in 1991 especially for the Towns Bi-Centennial Celebration. While chartered in 1763, the Town was officially organized in 1791. The book's editor was Paul Gillies.

The hardcover book measuring 7 3/4 by 10 1/4 inches is still available from the Berlin Historical Society and is for sale at the Berlin Town Hall and the Comfort Inn in Berlin. The cost is $25.

The Story of a Small Airport in Berlin, Vermont

Author: Richard W. Turner

Established in 1929 as the Barre-Montpelier Airport, it was taken over by the State of Vermont in 1968 and renamed The Edward F. Knapp State Airport after the retiring Commissioner of Aeronautics.

The book chronicles how and why the airport was created, the many improvements that have been made to the field over the years, the airlines that have flown in and out, air shows, plane crashes, people that have been connected with the airport and many other interesting stories such as:

The Green Mountain Boy which flew from the field in 1932 headed to Newfoundland , then on to Oslo, Norway and disappeared over the North Atlantic.

The day Amelia Earhart flew to the field when it was still a grass strip.

The book may be purchased at Rivendale Books at both of their locations, The Berlin Mall and at 100 Main St. in Montpelier; at the Vermont Historical Society bookstore in the Pavilion Building at 109 State Street in Montpelier; and at the Berlin Town Clerks Office at Berlin Corner (Monday thru Thursday from 8:30 to 3:30). It sells for $19.95 and all profit made from sales will go to the Berlin Historical Society, the publisher.
