The State Dynamite Shack blew up on August 1, 1932. In the background is the Barre-Montpelier Road and the barn in center left is now Walker Motors. The blast caused damage in surrounding areas and was heard as far away as 68 miles.

This area on what is now Berlin St, Northfield St and Main Street was a part of Berlin before it was annexed to Montpelier in 1899.
